|Learning with Epiacum Heritage...||
In August 2012, Epiacum Heritage Ltd was awarded £30,012 to deliver an exciting and innovative programme of Community Learning in the local area. The focus of the “Heritage – Our Future” project is to recruit adult learners from the rural community, who may be isolated because of their remote location. Linking to the Epiacum site, learning groups will focus on Heritage Skills which are in danger of being lost.
Through a funding stream from NIACE (National Institute for Adult Continuing Education), whose patron is HRH Princess Anne - the Princess Royal, learning opportunities will cascade into sustainable self study groups. Learners will be encouraged to contribute to the development of the online resources here, to develop their own interest in rural skills, heritage and archaeology, with opportunities to contribute widely and efficiently to the work of Epiacum Heritage Ltd as local volunteers.
Epiacum Roman Fort and the site date back 3000 years and the fort has been described as the “best preserved Roman Fort in the Roman Empire” and the “Hidden Gem of the North Pennines” , creating a fantastic focus for learning, including archaeology, research and practical outdoor activities
|Many individuals and organisations are involved with the management of Epiacum. We would particularly like to thank the following:
Heritage Lottery Fund, North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership, English Heritage, Natural England
